Barry Joseph Fine Furniture- Custom Made for You!

Barry Whalen, owner of Barry Joseph Furniture, is passionate about building furniture. After graduating Brookfield High School, he attended college where he played baseball and majored in Education.  Barry then moved to Colorado and became a Social Studies teacher.  He soon realized that while he enjoyed teaching his interests lay elsewhere.
He returned to Brookfield and started working for a furniture maker in Cornwall as an apprentice.  From there, he continued honing his craft, training for 12 years with some of the best craftsmen in the area and enrolling in courses at the Brookfield Craft Center.  Eventually he opened his own shop – Barry Joseph Fine Furniture.
Barry primarily deals with interior designers who hire him to make unique, one-of-a-kind pieces for their clients.  His work resides in some of the most exclusive homes and apartments from New York City to Dubai.  He hopes to expand his business by working with commercial clients, including bars and restaurants as they often require high quality, custom-made furniture pieces. He also wants to work more with end users.  “I enjoy the entire process of furniture making which includes working directly with clients to make their vision a reality.”
Increasingly, Barry’s homeowner clients are younger than one might expect.  “Millennials are tired of furniture that falls apart.  They are looking for furniture that they can pass down several generations.  They appreciate quality”.
In addition to Barry Joseph Fine Furniture, he also founded Whalen Sticks in 2007.  He began crafting wood baseball bats years ago. “It started when I was playing in a local baseball league and I brought a bat that I made in the shop.  I started getting requests from fellow players for themselves and for gifts”.   He explained that there is a real art to making a wood bat.  “You need the perfect grain and no defects in the wood.  The wood needs to be dried for the perfect amount of time.”  Barry also makes softball and little league bats.  Whalen Sticks are custom made-to-order s made from ash or maple in both youth and adult sizes.
